Letter from the Board: A Special Announcement

Dear Members of the Woods Creek Montessori Community,

Caroline Russell
Caroline Russell

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Caroline Russell will become the next Executive Director for Woods Creek Montessori. As you know, Caroline first stepped into this role on an Interim basis last August; since that time, she has provided steady leadership and skillfully guided the school through an unexpected transition. The Board is grateful for the outstanding work she has done this year. Her accomplishments are too numerous to list here, but highlights include the hiring and support of a strong teaching and administrative staff, maintaining high levels of student enrollment, guiding the development and ongoing implementation of improvements to our playground facilities, managing the tremendously successful art auction fundraiser, as well as making many other “behind the scenes” administrative improvements. The Board is excited about the passion, energy, and vision that Caroline brings to this role and thrilled that Woods Creek Montessori will be under her skilled leadership moving forward.

Caroline holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia and a Master’s degree in International Studies from the University of Cambridge, England. Caroline began her career promoting non-profit institutions of learning while working at the World Affairs Council in Richmond, and she worked for six years in the Development Office at Washington and Lee where she specialized in corporate and foundation grants, capital gifts, and stewardship. Caroline has deep ties to Woods Creek Montessori as both a parent, a former Board President in 2004-2005, and as Interim Director during the 2014-2015 academic year.

A Letter from the Board of Directors

Dear Members of the Woods Creek Montessori Community,

Yesterday, Christi Crittenden resigned as Executive Director of Woods Creek Montessori, effective immediately. The Board is grateful for Christi’s service and leadership over the past five years. Christi’s accomplishments for Woods Creek Montessori are many. Under her leadership, the school consistently hired a strong teaching staff; conducted highly successful fundraisers and community events; established and expanded programs to address child-care issues for working families, such as our after-school program; and in recent years experienced an increase in the size of the student body. The Board greatly values Christi’s achievements and deeply appreciates her commitment to Woods Creek Montessori over these years.

The Board of Directors will meet soon to begin developing plans for an orderly transition process. As you know, Caroline Russell has already agreed to serve as Interim Director throughout the fall semester. With Caroline’s leadership and Misty Camden’s excellent support, the Board is confident that the school administration will continue to run smoothly as we enter this transition period, just as it has throughout the academic year. We do not expect this change to have any impact on the day-to-day work our dedicated teachers do to educate and care for your children.

The Board will keep the community apprised of our plans as we develop them. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact any member of the Board. Despite the difficult circumstances of the past few months, the school year has gotten off to an excellent start – this is a real testament to the talent and dedication of our faculty and staff, who are at the heart of the school. All of us at Woods Creek Montessori will continue to do our best to provide your children with a high-quality educational environment.

On behalf of the Board,

Jeffrey Rahl

Caroline Russell Appointed Interim Executive Director

Dear Members of the Woods Creek Montessori Community,

Caroline Russell
Caroline Russell

The Board of Directors has appointed Caroline Russell to serve as Interim Executive Director during Christi’s leave of absence this fall.

Caroline has deep ties to Woods Creek Montessori as both a parent and a board officer, having served as Board President in 2004-2005.  During this time, the Board oversaw an expansion in program facilities and staff and developed a long range strategic plan. More recently, Caroline has been a volunteer language arts enrichment teacher at Waddell Elementary where she has taught a Great Books program.

Caroline has already met with the staff to begin planning for a successful academic semester, and she looks forward to meeting you at the Back to School event this evening. Although Christi’s absence is a difficult circumstance for our school, the Board has full confidence in Caroline and the staff to maintain the high standard of educational excellence that the community associates with Woods Creek Montessori. The Board, Interim Director, and Staff all hope to see you tonight at 7 PM for our Back to School event, and we look forward to another successful academic year.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Rahl
