Director’s Parent Letter: Spring Break Next Week!

Dear Parents,

Next week our campus will be closed for spring break, March 21 to 25. We will have an Extended Care Day on Monday, March 28 – please sign up with Jess by tomorrow (Friday) if you would like your child to attend school that day.

Lexington City published their 2016-2017 school calendar – please visit lexedu.org (click under LCPS to view calendar). We will publish our school calendar in the coming weeks (adding extended care days), but the core dates will remain the same. Please note that school will start on Monday, August 15 next academic year.

Lexington City Schools also announced that due to unused inclement weather days (3 out of 4 built in the calendar), the last day of school will be Thursday, June 2nd with an early release time of 1:00 pm. WCM school policy states that we will keep our originally published school closing date (even if Lexington City ends earlier). We will have our after school program on Thursday (including an earlier start time for elementary after school students), but we will not have after school on Friday, June 3. Our last day of school will be Friday June 3rd at 12:30 pm.

Warm wishes to all for a lovely spring break,

Caroline Russell
Executive Director

Director’s Parent Letter: Week Ending with October 30th

Dear Parents:

I wanted to let you know that the Woods Creek Board recently voted in favor of a new policy change for after school which will be effective for the 2016-2017 school year. The policy states that families with two or more children at WCM enrolled in a five day program (full school day including after school) pay only one family after school rate.

Tomorrow (10/30), WCM will celebrate Halloween at school. Your children are encouraged to come to school in costume tomorrow. If your child’s costume is cumbersome for lunch or playground purposes, please send a change of clothes. Please also be sure your child’s costume is not too scary for our younger friends on campus.

One of our after school teachers Danielle Houghson is involved in a lego study for 6 to 8 year olds through Washington and Lee. All participants will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win $20 in addition to benefiting research on child development. Please email fulcherlab@gmail.com to set up an appointment for your child to participate.

Volunteer Projects

We are looking for a parent volunteer to assemble a Melissa and Doug wooden kitchen for the Toddler classroom.

We would love to have parent volunteers come rake leaves on our campus any weekend. Leaves would need to be placed in clear plastic bags and left by trash cans in our parking lot.

Important Dates

  • October 30: Woods Creek celebrates Halloween
  • November 24: Early Closing at 12:30 pm
  • November 25-27: Thanksgiving Break – no school
  • December 18: Holiday Performance & Cookie Swap
  • December 21: Extended Care Day – please email Jess to register your child
  • December 22 – January 1: Winter Break – no school

Director’s Parent Letter: Week Ending with September 18th

Dear Parents,

One of the many advantages of our campus location is its proximity to W&L and VMI. In addition to the convenience for our many faculty families, we benefit from having talented college students within walking distance. During the past year, we have increased our college student presence on campus — helping with facilities projects and, notably, in our classrooms. Thanks to our college student volunteers, we have three teachers in each classroom on many mornings, helping us to achieve an ideal teacher to student ratio. Furthermore, our students are delighted with these college mentors and it is obvious to me that the college students are meaningfully rewarded by the time they spend with your children.

Christa Bowden (mother of Asher Bowden) has designed our wonderful new school shirts! Students will wear these shirts on field trips and for our spring class photo. Although families are not required to buy shirts, I encourage you to consider one — they are an excellent design and a great way to show school spirit. Please visit the following link to place your order – purchases must be made by October 9th: https://www.customink.com/g/tss0-00a8-t4w0

Hope you all will join us on our Family Harvest Hike at Lake Robertson on Saturday, October 3rd. Please visit the following link to sign up for a dish to share for lunch. Please also let me know if you have a cooler with spigot that we can borrow to serve lemonade to the children. www.SignUpGenius.com/go/5080B4FA9A723A57-fall

Important Dates

  • October 3: Family Harvest Hike – Lake Robertson
  • October 7: Fall Pictures with Kevin Remington
  • October 8: Potty Training Workshop 5:30 pm
  • October 14: Fall Picture Rain Date

Director’s Parent Letter: Week Ending with September 4th

Dear Parents:

I hope many of you are enjoying a long weekend. In recognition of Labor Day, WCM will be closed on Monday Sept. 7, except for those who have registered for our extended care day. For those students attending school on Monday, please be sure to bring a morning snack as we will not be providing our usual morning snack.

In addition to our great volunteer program and our in-house fundraising projects, there are a number of easy ways you can support our school as you go about your daily routine.

First, we encourage you to support our local Lexington and Rockbridge Co. businesses. These business owners are our friends and neighbors, and help to make Lexington and Rockbridge County a vibrant place to live. On September 15th, Ladles and Linens and Walkabout Outfitter in Lexington will host Support Your School day. Any purchase made at either store that day will benefit Woods Creek Montessori – please mention our school name if you buy something on September 15th. For more details, see the attached flyer.

In addition, we will soon distribute a Kroger barcode so we can receive free educational awards. All you have to do is scan the barcode once, directly after your Kroger Card, and you will link your Kroger Card to Woods Creek Montessori. Participating in this program costs you nothing, and does not take away from your fuel or store points. Parent participation in this program last year was a great success for WCM, earning us free iPads for our primary teachers, so please be sure to bring the barcode the next time you shop at Kroger!

We know that you may not always find everything you need in town. So, if you do find yourself looking to place an order at Amazon.com, please consider clicking on the image below, or bookmarking http://www.amazon.co/?tag=woodcreemont-20. Any purchase on Amazon through our school link will donate a portion of your purchase to our school. Using the link will not affect your purchase or Prime account in any way.

Volunteer Projects

We ask that each family contribute 12 hours per year (6 per semester). We have a sampling of volunteer opportunities on our website: https://woodscreekmontessori.org/parents/ (click on the green tab on right that says Sign Up for Volunteer Opportunities). Once you have completed hours, please email Jess (jess@woodscreekmontessori.org) as she will be recording parent volunteer hours.

Director’s Parent Letter: Week Ending with August 28nd

Dear Parents:

We had a great first full week of school! We were delighted to welcome back our returning students and the ‘veterans’ provided great assistance to their teachers and to our new students who are assimilating very well in our school community.

Our teachers were very poised during the temporary lockdown for Lexington Schools this week. The tragedy in Roanoke provided another reminder that the safety we have long enjoyed in our own community cannot be taken for granted and must remain our first priority at school.

To help usher in what we hope will be another beautiful autumn in the Valley, we have planned a family lunch and hike at Lake Robertson on Saturday, October 3rd beginning at 11:30 am. Please see attached invitation and sign up for a dish to share using this link: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/5080B4FA9A723A57-fall

Tuesday, September 1st is the deadline for enrollment in our September 7 Extended Care Day. If your child attends school on Mondays and plans to attend school on September 7, please email Jess (jess@woodscreekmontessori.org).

Volunteer Projects

I would like to highlight a few parent volunteer projects:

  1. Buildings and Grounds – Committee Chair Becky Tubb needs volunteers to assist with various campus projects. Please see the letter attached and respond to Becky (beckytubb@gmail.com) if you are willing to help with her committee.
  2. Feed the Teachers – Last year, we had a parent organize volunteers to bring Monday soup or salad for the Woods Creek teachers, a treat the teachers loved and looked forward to every week. Time commitment for the coordinator is minimal, and mainly involves creating a letter or genius link for parents to sign up to bring the teachers lunch on Mondays.
  3. Graphic design – We hope to offer new school T Shirts this year and we need help with design ideas.
  4. Looking further ahead, our Spring fundraising event for 2015-16 will be our popular Dance in the Garden (we alternate with our fabulous Art Auction every other year). We are seeking a Parent Chair to lead the planning of this event.

Important Dates

  • September 1: Deadline for enrollment in Extended Care Day
  • September 7: Extended Care Day – please email Jess to register your child
  • October 3: Family Harvest Hike – Lake Robertson
  • October 7: Fall Pictures with Kevin Remington
  • October 8: Potty Training Workshop 5:30 pm

Director’s Parent Letter: Week Ending with August 22nd

Dear Parents:

This week we welcomed a new school year with great energy and many smiles on our beautiful campus. Thanks to our dedicated teachers and staff and to all of you for making the first days of school run so smoothly.

A reminder for all, we begin the morning car pool line at 8:20 am and we conclude morning drop off at 8:45 am. If you arrive to campus after 8:45 am, please bring your child to the office and we will take your child to the classroom.

Washington and Lee provides a grant to Woods Creek which funds partial tuition waivers to eligible W&L families, the RATS transportation van (for our elementary after school students) and our extended care days. Throughout the school year, we offer five extended care days which provide extra school days (at no additional cost to parents) when the Lexington City School system is closed.

On Monday, September 7th (Labor Day), we have our first extended day on campus. If your child attends school on Mondays, you are welcome to bring your child to school on September 7th. All you have to do is to email Jess (jess@woodscreekmontessori.org) by September 1st to register your child/children.

Director’s Parent Letter: Week Ending with March 20th

Dear Parents:

It was wonderful to see many of you on Friday at our family potluck. Your children appeared to have a great time celebrating March Madness in the gym.

Spring cleaning is in full swing at WCM. We had a productive work session yesterday with volunteers from W&L working with the Nabors Service Day. Next Saturday, March 28 from 1 to 4 pm we will have VMI cadets on campus to help us spread wood chips on our playgrounds. We are hoping parents will be able to join us that day to help with other necessary projects including: painting doors and fences, power washing decks, and gardening in our flower beds. We also need a volunteer with access to a pickup truck to transport a playhouse from a residence in town to our lower playground. Please let me know if you will be able to help us that day.

Registration for summer camp enrollment is now open. Camp will run for eights weeks from June 15 to August 7 and parents are welcome to sign up for any week during the summer. We have added a new half day program for those families who are interested in a shorter camp day. To view our summer brochure and registration form, please visit https://woodscreekmontessori.org/enroll/ and scroll down to Summer Program Enrollment. Please do not hesitate to call the school office with any questions.

Director’s Parent Letter: Week Ending with March 13th

Dear Parents:

It is often said that we are a nation of immigrants. Perhaps this explains the popularity of St. Patrick’s Day. On March 17 we feel inspired by a celebration of family heritage, and for one day we are all a little bit Irish. Don’t forget to wear something green to school!

WCM will celebrate our own melting pot of diverse talents and backgrounds at our Family Potluck on Friday March 20 from 5:30 to 7:00 in W&L’s Doremus gym. Please bring a dish to share: Pre-Toddler classroom – salad or fruit; Toddler classroom – dessert; Primary I – main dish; Primary II – appetizer. If you have more than one child at WCM, you are welcome to choose one category. See the attached invitation for full details.

W&L will host a Summer Camp Fair this Thursday, March 19 from 10 am to 1:00 pm in the Elrod Commons Living Room. The Camp Fair will have information about many local summer camps, including the WCM summer camp program. We will have our brochure and registration materials, so please stop by our table if you come to the Fair.

The Kohl Family Farm has invited WCM to visit on Saturday, March 21 at 12 pm. They have more than 40 baby goats! Please wear appropriate shoes and clothing for a farm visit. The goats do not like to be wet so if there is more than a 50% chance of rain in the forecast, we will postpone to another time.

The address of the Farm is 191 Reservation Loop, Glasgow VA 24555. They are not really in Glasgow but just off Rt. 11 heading towards Natural Bridge. About a mile and a half before the Safari Park. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

Director’s Parent Letter: Week Ending with February 27th

Dear Parents:

As we bid a fond farewell to the snow and record-setting cold of February 2015, I want to express to the WCM community that the Staff shares parents’ frustration over weather closings and delays. Many of us have school children too. For better or worse, we have for many years followed the Lexington City Schools decisions on weather closings. The Superintendent is better positioned than us to communicate with VDOT and Public Works and to make these decisions for the safety of students and teachers. In addition, although inconvenience is inevitable when weather closings occur, the clarity provided by our policy to follow Lexington has a benefit of its own.

Many of you know from experience that while we follow the Lexington weather policy, our school calendars are not identical. WCM is in session for students on several days throughout the academic year when Lexington is closed for a holiday or teacher work day. Beyond scheduled closings, Lexington Schools allocated four snow days into the 2014-15 academic calendar. All four days have now been used. Lexington has added Friday, March 27 as a school day for students, and Woods Creek Montessori will also have school on that day (requires registration). In the event of additional weather-related closings, if Lexington extends its school year, we will extend ours too.

Please save the date for our Art Auction on Saturday, April 11 from 4 to 7 pm. This event has a great tradition as a fabulous evening out for parents, alumni parents and staff to enjoy some food and cocktails and help support the school. Be sure to visit our Facebook page to see some excellent artwork already donated for the event. We are looking for a few more parents to help distribute and display art auction posters around town, so please sign up through the link below if you are available to help.
